Books That Became Great Movies And Vice Versa!

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Who does not love a great movie? These days movies are probably more popular as a form of entertainment than reading (I say probably because I still want to believe that the world chooses reading first!). At least us book lovers out there can rest assured that the stories, the really good ones that we could not put down, are often being turned into equally great movies! For example, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood written by Rebecca Wells is charming, funny, and devastatingly honest about alcoholism and how it affects a childs life all the way into adulthood. Sidda and Vivis tumultuous relationship is easy to imagine and easier to root for a happy ending. This is a book worth reading as well as continuing on to read the titles spun off of it (Little Altars Everywhere and Ya-Yas in Bloom). The movie is just as good. Of course, as any true Harry Potter fan will tell you, it is IMPOSSIBLE to include all the good parts of book in the movie version. The best we can hope for is a good rendition of our beloved story. Well, the Ya-Ya movie does its mother creation justice! Sandra Bullock is perfectly cast as Sidda, the jaded but good natured daughter. And never was there a better Vivi than Ashley Judd (young woman) and Ellen Burstyn. These two actresses flawlessly turn Vivi into a loveable, horrible mother whom we cheer on till the very end. Finally the movie would not be complete without James Garners sweet portrayal of Shep Walker. So you see, it is possible. Great books CAN turn into great movies! Of course, there are the times where a great book is totally butchered (A Series of Unfortunate Events anyone?) but that is a conversation for another time.To check out some great book reviews as well as fantastic book and movie combos, visit me athttp://www.book-club-queen.com/book-and-movie.htmlDesiree, aka Queenie D is an English teacher, mom, and lover of books!Want more information on book clubs? Wooden Trash Cans

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Trash cans may not bring a pleasant image into most of use, since these are where the litter and waste are put, and a picture of decaying solid wastes as well as the putrid odors that it produces is nauseating to many. But while the main idea behind trash cans are mainly to hold the garbage and trash, you don’t need to confine it in that aspect alone as there could be something else you can make use of them. Apparently, not too long ago, trash cans were discovered to serve another purpose while containing the garbage.Fine examples of trash cans that would serve dual-purpose are those made of wooden. This is crafted to be classically beautiful by nature. The concept may be old-fashioned but also blended with a contemporary design so that it will fit any design. Wooden trash cans are perfect for any business establishments and any other commercial applications. They have the kind of flair and sophistication to fit any corporate offices and hotels. They are also flexible enough to use them in households, streets, small offices, and others. With the proliferation of wooden trash cans in different designs, there are many options for you. You can pick one that could actually function as one of the decorating pieces of the room. The only disadvantage of using wooden trash cans is that when the garbage dumped inside are things that get easily decayed such as fruit peels, plastic containers, food leftovers, food crusts, beverage containers, and other similar items they would get directly into the trash can’s wood material. They could damage the receptacle easily especially if not mended properly. In order to prevent this, you could take solution to this such as constantly emptying the bin and cleaning it after.Other than that mentioned destructive factor, wooden trash cans can be your perfect additional item to your business establishment or in your household. You don’t need to worry that people might get distracted by the unpleasant sight any ordinary trash cans may provide. Instead, they may even be the perfect instrument to make the place visually artistic and sophisticated to look at.Trash Cans provides detailed information on Collapsable Trash Cans, Commercial Trash Cans, Kitchen Trash Cans, Metal Trash Cans and more. Metal Detectors - Ensuring Safety

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Although it used to be common for average folks to only encounter walk through metal detectors in the airport, these handy self defence tools are growing in both convenience and popularity. What is the benefit of metal detectors and why are we seeing the hand-held metal detector used more and more in everyday life?Metal detectors are one of the effective and efficient self defence tools because they, more than any other item, have the power to disarm an attacker and stop the problem before it occurs. Metal detectors are the ultimate in non-violent protection and their growing popularity is a strong step towards increased safety.History of the Metal DetectorThese fascinating devices first came into use in the 19th century and have certainly come a long way thanks to creative innovation and invention. Using electromagnetic induction, metal detectors create a magnetic field when they come in contact with a metallic object. This field allows the detector to emit a high-pitched sound, revealing the presence of a metal object, and often pointing to its direct location.Hand Held or Walk Through?Unless you are looking to guard a large entrance that has a high volume of traffic, it is most likely that a hand held metal detector will be the choice for your needs. As a more economical option than the walk through models, hand held metal detectors are perfect for determining whether a visitor, intruder, or suspicious stranger is carrying a concealed weapon.Which ManufacturerThe model and manufacturer that you select will depend on your specific needs and your security budget. Of course, as with all self defence items, it is important to remember that is not a time to be thrifty. One of the most highly recommended manufacturers of metal detectors is Adams Electronics. Metal detector reviews consistently show that consumers prefer Adams Metal Detectors based on price, value, and reliability.Adams Electronics is dedicated to manufacturing a full product line of metal detectors, which means that consumers are able to select the perfect product specifications for their needs. Whether you require a general purpose model for everyday use or a super sensitive model for more hostile situations, Adams metal detectors are renowned for detecting the smallest metal objects - including those that are concealed within the human body.In fact, Adams Electronics was the first company to introduce the original hand held metal detector, the Adams Metal Detector model B100. This self defence tool was first released to the market in 1965 and its launch has created the foundation on which Adams Metal Detectors’ reputation has been built. The reality is that you already trust Adams Metal Detectors every day. These are the same detectors that are protecting our airports and ensuring that prison inmates remain inside and weapon free.Quit taking security chances. Metal detectors stop a potentially hostile situation before it even occurs, by locating concealed weapons and allowing you to either confiscate them or remove yourself from a dangerous situation. Moreover, metal detectors are proven to deter criminal activity because would-be attackers know that you are not going to be an easy victim. People think twice about concealing weapons once they realize that they will be caught - and with an Adams Metal Detector, they will be caught. You can view an entire range of Adams Metal Detector products at http://bljsselfdefense.com/adams_metal_detectors.html . Speed Skating - Facts About Roller Blading

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Roller blading is considered to be a good choice for all skaters, especially during the off season. But, the fact is that roller blading is a great tool only for speed skaters. It does not prove to be a useful training element for figure skaters. In the present scenario, many skaters have started to incorporate roller skating into their training for speed skating. However, inline skating in the off-season is an excellent for short and long track ice racers. It is very essential to make a combination of weight training, stretching, and cardio training, a part of the exercise regimens for speed skaters. This kind of training includes bicycling, plyometrics, and roller blading.Off-ice skating tends to help the speed skaters to maintain their physical conditioning over the summer months. Incorporating inline skating in the training is quite beneficial for speed skaters. As off-ice offers more resistance, inline speed skating helps to build cardio and respiratory endurance needed for long-distance racing. This is because inline skating requires more energy to sustain speed. On the other hand, with roller blading, skaters can slow down and focus more on perfecting techniques. Moreover, the speed skates are much lighter than the inline skates. Therefore, the skaters who roller blade and then race on the ice feel more powerful and light with their speed skates.Bear in mind that training with weights around the ankles is not a good idea as it is known to cause knee problems. This is because the extra weight from inline speed skates allows the ice racers to develop some amount of tolerance to the heavier off-ice skates.Ultimately, it is this tolerance that translates into more speed on ice when the extra resistance and weight are removed!Betting Baseball - Find the best bet.

Big Pecs - How to Build Chest Muscles

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Aside from big arms, there’s no desire among aspiring underweight muscle building enthusiasts that quite outdoes the longing for a big, well-developed chest. And why not; big pectorals command respect. They’re somehow primitively associated with courage and assertiveness. When you have pectoral muscles that only slightly protrude beyond your abdominal section, you’re considered to be “in shape”. What’s more, in a world of male competitiveness where one’s height seems to unfairly monopolize the aura of dominating physical stature, powerful pectorals can be a great equalizer. They tell the world that regardless of the level your genetics had you lengthened, you’re packaged physical prowess by choice. You exude strength and athleticism with well developed pectorals. So what’s the best method for developing a big chest? Well, that shouldn’t be our only question. For if the pectorals aren’t built in a balanced manner, excessive size can contribute to a feminizing effect on the male torso. Does anyone really want to develop “man boobs”? I didn’t think so. Therefore, it’s imperative that we make our pecs just a little bit top-heavy (upper pecs that protrude slightly more than the middle pecs) in our bid to increase chest size. An emphasis on making sure we are successful with incline exercises will ensure good upper pectoral development.Notice I didn’t recommend doing “a lot of incline exercises”. Instead, I mentioned making sure you’re ’successful’ with your incline movements (this goes for all bodybuilding exercises). Although this might sound like a subtle play on words, it’s really a vital issue for your muscle building progress. Overtraining is probably the biggest setback most natural bodybuilding enthusiasts unwittingly engage. Thus, you might need to add more incline bench movements to build bigger upper pecs, or you might need to lay off of those movements. It really depends on what you’re currently doing. Just keep in mind that many times our enthusiasm to make progress on a particular body part leads us to inadvertently overwork that area - resulting in the exact opposite of our desired effect. As a lifetime natural bodybuilder, nothing has done more for my pectoral development than taking emphasis off ‘pressing movements’ and putting it on ‘flye movements’. The widespread notion that you “have to bench press” and “bench press heavy” has only been outdone in holding back pectoral growth by the practice of over training. Combine the two with the typical plights of the natural bodybuilder and you have a scenario in which pectoral growth is almost nonexistent for too many gym-goers. If heavy bench pressing were the key to a great chest, we’d see power-lifters epitomizing pectoral development. As it turns out, some of them have big pecs and some seem to have nearly none - despite the fact they can bench press heavy. What if you could do heavy flyes? What if you could get on an incline bench and strictly move seventy-five pound dumbbells from the top of the movement - slowly down to having your arms outstretched and the weights parallel with your head (elbows only slightly bent) - and back up to the top position without any arm movement? If you can’t do that for six to eight repetitions now, but you can do it a few months from now, I’d bet on your pectoral muscles being significantly larger after those few months. Making strict and heavy flye movements into the cornerstone of your chest routine can work wonders for the growth of those muscles.Besides changing bench pressing movements to a secondary position and flyes to the primary one, I’ve also accelerated my pectoral gains by splitting my first flye movement into two partial rep exercises. So when I get to the gym to start my chest routine, I head straight to one of those pec/flye machines in which you hold the handles with your arms extended (only a slight bend in the elbows). These are the kind of pec dec machines that are also used for rear deltoid exercises. I adjust the seat on the machine so that a flye movement done on the apparatus will hit squarely in the middle of my pecs.I then proceed to do two different exercises with this machine; one for my outer pecs and one for the inner. For outer pectorals, I move my arms from the fully outward position to about halfway through the range of a full flye. I do about five to eight sets like this. For inner pecs, I go from about the twenty degrees angle (where I ended my rep for the outer pec movement) to the point where the handles make contact with each other in front of me. I do those for another five to eight sets. When I’m done with these two partial rep exercises, my entire chest is worked and pumped to the max. It’s important to know that working the middle chest muscles actually brings the upper and lower pectorals into play. However, isolating the upper chest with incline movements does not bring the middle or lower chest muscles into play. The same goes for isolating the lower chest with declines; it only works the lower pectorals. Therefore, the most efficient way to begin a chest routine is with an exercise that hits the middle chest. My suggestion is that when you begin your pec workout with the above-mentioned exercise, be sure to adjust the seat so that you’re hitting the very center of your chest.Only when I’ve sufficiently pre-exhausted my pectorals with the strict performance of these partial-rep flyes do I go on to isolate the upper and lower pecs respectively with three more exercises. These include incline dumbbell flyes, Hammer Strength presses, and a decline angled pec deck. I do two exercises for upper pecs in an attempt to slightly over-develop them for better balance; the dumbbell flyes and the pressing movement with the Hammer Strength machine. Presses are incredibly more effective for pectoral growth when the pecs have been pre-exhausted with flyes. If you’ve been having trouble with pectoral growth, I highly recommend you switch to making flye exercises the foundation of your routine. In addition, split that first exercise of pec deck flyes into two half-rep movements. This will create maximum stress on both the inner and outer pecs - working wonders on both the size and shape of the muscles.Scott Abbett is the author of HardBody Success: 28 Principles to Create Your Ultimate Body and Shape Your Mind for Incredible Success. The DJ Is More Important Than You Think

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

You’re engaged, congratulations! Now what? If you’re like most brides you’re probably overwhelmed with all the planning that goes into creating a fairy-tale reception. Did you know that finding the perfect DJ is one of the biggest responsibilities you have? THAT’S RIGHT! “One of the biggest responsibilities”. Let me prove it to you. Ask yourself what would you love to hear as your guests are leaving? Could it be…?”WOW that was the most fun I’ve ever had at a wedding, your reception was absolutely beautiful, every detail was perfect!” If that’s what you want to hear, then finding the best DJ is the most important job you’ll have when planning your reception. This is because the DJ has one of the biggest roles in creating your perfect day. You need to place a lot of TRUST and CONFIDENCE in this person. Why, you ask? Well consider this; you’re probably going to spend thousands of dollars on a reception site, catering, flowers and a photographer to name a few expenses. While all these components are important, what do you think most people remember about your reception? Here are the most common top 3 answers:1. the Fun 2. the Food 3. the LocationKeeping this in mind, let me ask you this; if the location is breath-taking and the food is “to die for”, could a bad performance by your DJ sour the whole day? Conversely, if the location poses logistic problems and the food is just o.k. could a spectacular, fun-filled, jammed packed dance floor make up for those problems? If you answered yes to both questions you now understand how important the DJ is. The reality is, you spend so much time and money to create the perfect reception it seems ashamed to ruin it by choosing the wrong DJ. So what’s a nervous bride to do? Get the best DJ now!I know that if you’re reading this your in the process of gathering information. Booking your entertainment should be a top priority. Doesn’t it make sense that the best DJs book early? (as early as 12-18 months in advance) This means you need to find someone now. The less time you have, the more you need my help.I’m a retired DJ of 25 years and my goal is to help you understand the DJs role by revealing a DJ secret that most people in the business don’t want you to know.DJ Secret #1: The majority of brides’ think the DJ’s role is to make a couple of announcements and play good music. This is because that’s all they see. While these are very important to the success of your reception they only represent one-third of the DJs responsibilities. The other two-thirds of the DJs role happens behind the scenes. Helping you plan and managing the flow of the day’s events is just as important as playing the right music. Consider this; the function manager’s role is to make sure the food is hot and on time. That’s their job. When the food service is finished they’re gone. But the DJ is there from the beginning to the end. The timing of the food is only one of a number of factors the DJ needs to consider. A keen awareness of every aspect of your reception is the key to maintaining a flow that results in a packed dance floor the rest of the night. You might be asking yourself “how does a DJ prepare for all these factors?”The best DJs begin their preparations far in advance. Over the course of several conversations with the couple, the DJ should have a good feel for what they are looking for. The final details will be carefully choreographed at the planning meeting with bride a week or so before the reception. Here is where the bride discusses her vision of the perfect reception (order of events, music, announcements, etc̷ ;) It is the DJs responsibility to work with the bride in developing a time-line for all the special moments. Together the bride and the DJ should have a clear understanding of exactly when these moments will take place. If the DJ did his job correctly the bride should leave this meeting 100% confident that the DJ will make her vision a reality.Carrying out your vision the day of your reception takes a team effort. The best DJs contact the bride’s wedding vendors before the reception to go over the agenda. This is where any conflict with food service or photography issues should be discussed. By doing this the DJ can avoid any obstacles that could cause the reception to get off schedule. You can bet a wedding team that understands and agrees on the bride’s vision will work more smoothly behind the scenes to make it happen. What does this mean to you? You should be looking for a DJ who can reassure you they represent your needs behind the scenes; that they are working for you. I can tell you this; there will always be wrinkles at the reception that the vendors must work out. But a wedding team (led by the DJ) that is on the same page will handle it without you ever finding out.Mike, a top Wedding DJ for 25 years, has just retired. The preferred DJ for the Kennedy family and many four star hotels including the Four seasons and the Ritz Carlton, Mike has been the #1 choice for over 2000 brides. In retirement, his new focus is using his insider information to help brides find and hire the best DJ at the best price. For more info: http://www.djsecretsforthebride.com

Good Dental Care At Home Can Keep Your Teeth Looking Bright!

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Using a good quality toothbrush and toothpaste can help keep your smile bright! When we talk about dental care many people think about that trip to the dentists every 6 months. You DO go to the dentist regularly don’t you? OK, may of us don’t because of the time involved or expense. The second best way to protect your teeth is to follow a regular dental care regimen at home. This would include not only brushing your teeth with a quality toothbrush but also using some type of dentifrice or toothpaste and regular use of dental floss. Flossing is probably the least used but most effective way to clean areas of your teeth that cannot be reached with brushing alone.Toothpaste is a paste used, almost always in conjunction with a tooth brush, to clean teeth. Good oral hygiene demands consistent brushing on a daily basis preferably after each meal. The first reference to toothpaste was found believe it or not in Egyptian writings. Toothpaste back then was probably a mixture of spices like sale and peppermint and probably some herbs. Although not exactly our idea of good tasting, it was most likely very effective for keeping down the decaying food particles and was considered good basic dental care of the day.In the late 1800’s, toothpaste and dental care become a growth industry for many smaller companies. Oral hygiene of the day was a mixture of chalk and various salts designed more as an abrasive to scrape off plaque than make your mouth clean. We now know that these types of toothpastes or powders actually damaged teeth because of the abrasive nature of the ingredients. The abrasiveness scraped and damaged the enamel coating that protected teeth and left them more vulnerable to decay and plaque build up.By 1900, baking soda made it’s way into commercial toothpaste products along with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide solution. This was probably the very beginnings of teeth whitening products for the mass market. Although actual tooth cleaning pastes were first marketed in the 19th century, it was not very popular until the mid 1900’s. The Colgate & Company manufactured toothpaste in the first collapsible tube, similar to the tubes we use today. These were actually the first products that had the basic compounds to brighten and whiten teethHydrogen peroxide, although in higher concentrations is being used today to remove staining and whiten teeth. Although tooth powders, a pre cursor product to toothpaste didn’t show up on the market until this time, it wasn’t until the mid 1950-1960 that modern toothpaste that we recognize became the teeth cleaner of choice.Fluoride started to be added to toothpastes in the 1950 and 1960’s. Fluoride is still controversial due to the claimed “dangers” of anything chemical. Although fluoride is not good for people in large quantities, it’s a fact that as fluoride has been added to the nations water supply, the number of cavities in children has dropped dramatically. Of course, there’s little doubt that fluoride has been instrumental in lowering the number of dental cavities.Like many shampoos, healthier ingredients (such as baking soda, pseudo-mouthwash etc) are often combined into base mixes of varying qualities and marketed as being beneficial. Toothpaste is most commonly sold in flexible tubes, although one may also purchase it in hard plastic containers with pumps. Packages designed to stand straight up, so as to allow more of the toothpaste to be used, are a relatively recent innovation. You only need a little toothpaste to get the job done however. Remember that the toothpaste manufacturers have an interest in getting you to overuse their product, making more purchases likely. A pea sized amount is more than enough to do a good job brushing your teeth.Toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors, with those marketed to kids! Tasting like orange, cinnamon and bubblegum. Taste has nothing to do with the quality of the product however but may get some people and children to brush longer. So for a good brushing, use a quality toothpaste and soft bristle brush. Your teeth and gums will thank you!Abigail Franks writes on a variety of subjects such as home, family, and health. Maintenance on Your Log Home

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Like every other house exposed to the elements, Log Homes are neither maintenance free, nor are they absolute killers to take care of. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to state that the first couple of years demand significantly more work than your standard-issue house - unless, of course, you can afford to pay someone to do the work for you! Log preparation and the base coat of stain are critical to the long-term success of your wall protection. But once the initial work is done, the maintenance becomes routine, and I would venture to guess log homes are a little easier to care for than other wood houses. After all, you don’t have to strip the stain off between coats.LOG PREPARATION: Most construction sites become a sea of mud in a short period of time. The soil has been disturbed and there’s no grass to hold the dirt together (or absorb the rain). You’ll discover that the first few log courses are absolutely pristine, but the higher the walls become, the more the logs get dropped, smudged, or even used as stepping stones to dryer places (like the port-a-potty). Once the house is up, the logs will have to be washed before applying a stain… both inside and out.Doing the interior cleaning in the right order didn’t occur to us - especially since the logs were erected in the winter. In our case, the timing was all wrong; you really want to wash the interior walls before the finished floor is laid, and before the basement insulation is installed under the floor decking. We didn’t make it, and we had to follow our wall-washing with a shop-vac to get rid of all the water… what a mess!It was recommended that we use a mixture of one part bleach and four parts trisodium phosphate. We scrubbed it on with a brush and rinsed it off. Some people recommend a power washer for the outside walls, but you must use great care, and apply with a fan-tip to avoid damaging the logs. The experts recommend corn cob-blasting, but this is an expense most of us can’t afford. If you do use a power-washer, it’s a good idea to follow up with a shop-vac and vacuum out the water that will pool inside the checks, so that the logs don’t get saturated from water sitting in the cracks. Even so, it will take one or more days to dry completely, depending on the weather.Once the logs are dry, it is recommended that you apply a borate treatment before applying the stain. This borate is not only an insecticide, it also protects against rot. Usually this comes as a powder, and is mixed with water and sprayed on with an ordinary garden sprayer. Make sure it doesn’t rain between applying the borate and the stain, or the borate will probably wash out.STAINING: All stains are not created equal. There is a big performance difference between the best and the worst, so make sure you don’t try to save money by cutting corners on the stain - you’ll pay for it later. A deck sealer just won’t work for logs; you should use a product specially designed for log homes, and you won’t find it at your local hardware store. For a good brand, budget around $250 per 5-gal pail. Our 2400 sq. foot house took about 5 pails initially. Most stains need to be applied in two or three coats, so make sure your painter knows this when going for a quote. You will want to stain the exterior as soon as possible after the house is erected; it’s amazing how quickly the logs will turn gray under normal exposure.Afterwards, a “maintenance coat” of stain needs to be applied every 2-5 years, depending on the exposure. You usually don’t have to restain the whole house at one time. You’ll see the color lighten up as the stain wears thin - for lack of a better word. If you’re not sure whether a new coat is required, run a hose on the wall and see if the water beads up. If it does not, you’re probably ready for another coat. And no, you don’t have to strip off the old stain first, unless it has been neglected and shows sign of flaking and chipping. If your walls have gone 10 years without a second coat, you may have to corn-blast and start over. In this case, consult a specialist.RAILING SYSTEM: The weak link of every log home is the railing system - especially on an exposed deck. The junctures between the rails and spindles need to be caulked thoroughly, and you’ll see many more checks in the little railings giving the opportunity to let rain in. The railing system needs to be restained every year. Make sure you don’t let any water drip on the railings; gutters are a must.CAULKING: It is a personal preference whether or not you caulk the exterior of your log home, but common sense would tell us that it’s good policy to lock out the elements. There are caulks specifically designed for log homes that remain supple and give with normal expansion & contraction. The first couple of years, it is advised to caulk any checks that appear on the upper curve of the log surface, where rain might collect. These caulks will take a stain, so they tend to blend in. After the house has reached equilibrium with its environment, the checking will cease.INSECTS: You can read more about insects in my article LOG HOMES vs. INSECTS: What to look for. For the most part, there is visual evidence of any insect problem. Make it a policy to inspect your home in the spring and in the fall, and be sure to keep your walls free of foliage, dead leaves, etc. Bushes should be planted a minimum of 2 feet away from the walls. Don’t stack firewood against the wall, or anything else that could provide a home for unwelcome critters, four-legged or six-legged ones.BOTTOM LINE: Maintenance on your log home should be routine, and the best defense is keeping a careful eye on abnormalities. Discoloration of a corner probably means water is dripping on it. A little pile of sawdust probably means a boring insect. Holes in the log, regardless of how tiny, are a red flag. These are the kinds of things you’d look for with any house. And after you’ve had your inspection, relax on the deck and enjoy your home… you deserve it.Mercedes Hayes is a Hiawatha Log Home dealer and also a Realtor in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
